Colored Burlap Fabric is just what it sounds like, a fabric made out of the fibrous remains of a burlap plant. Burlap can be either natural or synthetic. It is usually harvested by the hand and is processed into a product like paper, rope and burlap.
Burlap is a type of desert plant native to the southwestern United States and southwestern Africa. The plant grows in rich, dark soil along river banks where it is able to grow for years without being cut down. When the harvest season comes, burlap is gathered and the stalks are used as roofing materials, canvas for bags and even to make rope to pull up water from the dry river beds. For this reason, burlap has been used for ages to make all kinds of things.
The natural color of burlap is green, so it can be dyed many different colors to fit into any project. To make a simple quilt, all you need to do is choose the correct weight of cotton and work with that. Cotton which is slightly more than double-weight is preferred, because it will not wrinkles as easily. If the fabric is too heavy, it will not hang straight.
Another advantage of using this kind of fabric is that it dyes well. Although burlap does not dye very well (because it lacks color), it still dyes fairly well when coated with acrylic paint. You can paint large areas of the fabric green and let it dry, then once it is completely dry, you can use a color dye. Dyeing can also be used on large sections of the fabric at a time, if it is tightly wound or if it was not plaited. You may even want to put it on an outside clothes line to dry and allow the color to run.
There are some disadvantages, as well. Since it can absorb colors, it should not be used in a bathroom where there is high concentration of light. This will make the colors in the room seem strange. It will also stain if it gets wet enough. When it is not tightly wrapped, it can flop out and get lost.
